The course is aimed at analysing the intrinsic connection between ethical issues on
the one hand, and economic processes and theories on the other hand, and will
provide students with the critical capability to investigate the ethical dimension of
economy.
In particular we will focus on the relationship between development, social and
global justice. The issues that will be tackled ultimately refer to the following
questions: (why) should economic theories and processes be compatible with the
fostering of human flourishing and social justice? and In the era of a globalised
economy, are there global or even universal ethical limits to economics?, i.e. (why)
should economics be analysed in the framework of global justice and the promotion
of human rights?

The course will be divided into two parts.
The first part will be dedicated to the analysis of the relationship between
development and social justice at the level of national States: here we will argue the
importance of combining efficiency and equity reasons in order to evaluate the
goodness of state of affairs, and will highlight the importance of focusing on the
distribution of welfare, rather then only on the overall level of welfare achieved.
The second part will discuss the possibility of an extension of the above issues from
the national to the global level and will argue the importance of a shift from social to
global justice, given the global nature of contemporary economic processes.
