    Course title: The English Language in America
    Course description:
    This course will focus on:
    -a historical overview of the transformations of the English language in America with a particular focus on Noah Webster’s Dictionary and nineteenth century lexicon.
    -Walt Whitman’s contribution to contemporary English.
    -Essay writing.

    Aa 2011-2012: Lingua e traduzione anglo-americana I/M (Mod. a) e II/M Prof. Camboni’s course: Evaluation -participation in class work, including oral and written reports; -personal essay -oral presentation of selected material of your choice. To complete their work for the exam, students are required to: - write a final personal essay of: 1.500 words (I year) 2.000 words (II year and Erasmus students), that discusses Whitman’s essays on language in relation to Webster’s view of American English as expressed in his 1928 Dictionary and the views of dictionary and dictionary making examined in class; Whitman’s use of non-English words in “Starting from Paumanok” by examining their presence in the poem and in the corpus of his work with the help of the Walt Whitman’s Archive. - Find, introduce and comment video-audio-textual material of your choice that illustrates distinctive aspects of American English. In order to do this, read carefully “American English and its Distinctiveness” and study the specificities of American English at the different language levels (EDWARD FINEGAN, in E. FINEGAN and J.R. RICKFORD, Language in the USA: Themes for the Twenty-first Century, Cambridge (GB), Cambridge University Press, 2004, pp. 18-38). The exam will be considered completed and a mark assigned after the written exam for the lettorato has been passed.

    Work to be done by the students. Students are expected to: - Listen to/read regularly the talks/texts as indicated in the class schedule; - write a summary of Ryan’s and Davis’s Talks according to the lines given; - write a short essay of 1500 words. For this essay you are asked to discuss how Ryan, Davis, Pinker define language and its relation to culture; their observations about the English language, its structure and present-day role; reflect on their use of lexicon and definitions. Follow the guidelines for descriptive essay writing. Deadline: December 6. - write a short argumentative essay of 1500 words on “The need for an American vernacular language in Webster and Whitman”. Follow the guidelines for the writing of an argumentative essay. Deadline: December 15.
