During this course, we have tackled a variety of subjects and have explored the work of several artists and intellectuals associated with Surrealism in Europe and the Americas. As your final presentation, you can explore in depth the oeuvre of one of the artists that we already discussed in class, or another personality or artistic production associated with Surrealism. While preparing your presentation, ask yourself and explain to the class why you are interested in the subject. What is it that made you dedicate your time to this phenomenon and how it affected you. What is it that you want us to know and feel about the subject of your research project. Be prepared to speak coherently for 10 minutes. Good images always help. A deep analysis of one to three images is always better than a brief mention of many more. I look forward to your research projects! Good luck. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need assistance and advice.
Please watch The Exterminating Angel directed by Luis Bunuel and read the essay by Marcia Kinder and an interview with the the director. The DVD of the film under its Italian title L'angelo sterminatore is available at the Videoteca at the UNIMC computer centre on the lowest level of Polo Pantaleoni in Centro Storico. Enjoy. I look forward to reading your comments and to our class discussion!
Please start by reading the essay by Susan Rubin Suleiman, “The Bird Superior Meets the Bride of the Wind: Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst.” Then proceed to a excerpt from Leonora Carringtion's The Hearing Trumpet. I recommend that you read pp.3-23. Choose a piece by Carrington that you would like to comment on.
Please read Betty Ann Brown, “Surrealism 1949,” “María Izquierdo, Frida Kahlo, Alice Rahon, Remedios Varo” After reading these materials, please research these four artists and choose a work by one of them that most appeals to you and that you would like to comment on in class.
Please start with the link entitled "Introduction to Lam at The Tate"; then follow with the link "Explore Lam's oeuvre" and then proceed to "Lam at the MOMA."

Please watch both videos and paintings on this site. Choose a work that you would like to comment on.
Students are expected to read the texts before class and bring a 300-word reflection on reading to class to turn it in. On October 15, every student will comment a painting by Salvador Dali, preferably from the collection of The Dali Museum in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Choose a work from the following website and email your instructor the title of the painting that you are going to comment in class, in order to avoid repetition. https://archive.thedali.org/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=collection Email me at bakhtiarg@wcsu.edu
In order to be successful in this seminar, students are expected to read/watch certain texts/films or other materials suggested by the instructor and come to class prepared to discuss them. A 300-word reflection on reading is also expected to be turned in. You may express your opinion about what you read and/or watched. Think how it contradicts or corresponds with what you already knew and expected. What is it that you learned preparing for this class? What surprised you? These reflections are intended to help you with your final paper/project. They will also help you with your English language proficiency.
