Students will acquire knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals of the
2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the UN and the United Nation World
Tourism Organization program to for furthering knowledge of the tourism sector,
monitoring progress, evaluating impact, promoting results-focused management, and
highlighting strategic issues for policy objectives. In the second part of the course
students will demonstrate to be capable of defining ecotourism and sustainable
destinations and managing geographical issues of environmental, economic and
social sustainability.

Brief History of the Idea and Main International Agreements;
Definition of Tourist Destinations;
Mass Tourism and Sustainable Tourism;
Main International Destinations and Features of Sustainability;
Definition of Ecotourism and the Eco-tourist;
Ecomuseums;
Natural Parks;
Garden Tourism and European Garden Festivals.
Part 2
Sustainable Destination Policy and Governance;
Tourist Carrying Capacity;
Making a Sustainable Destination;
Case Studies and Examples on Topics of Part 1.

- Frontal Lessons;
- Small and Medium Group Work and Exercises;
- Audio-video Attendance;
- Performing of a Case Study on Ecotourism or Sustainable Destination;
- Featuring of a Presentation on an Argument of Ecotourism or Sustainable
Destination.
- Two in itinere tests. A not structured test (writing a report on a Case Study). An
individual or per group presentation (using a PPT) of a Case Study. The grade per
each test will contribute to the final mark, which is the average of partial results. The
Final Oral Test is reserved to the students who didn't receive a sufficient grade
in the in itinere tests or missed one of them.
