Knowledge of the English language at least at B2 level of the CEFR (Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages).

The course aims at developing an advanced knowledge of the English language (at C1 level) in the context of political and economic international relations. Through the consolidation of written and oral skills, and the theoretical and practical analysis of linguistic, textual and rhetorical features of press articles, media news reports, and conversational excerpts, students will acquire a thorough understanding of communication dynamics as well as an insight into negotiation strategies that are required to operate in diplomatic milieus. They will also be enabled to contribute, in a linguistically and culturally effective way, to the drawing up and presentation of projects and documents in English for the purposes of international cooperation.

The course has a three-part structure addressing theoretical, analytical and communicative competences.

Specifically, theoretical insights will be gained into features of English usage that pertain to the contexts of international communication. Such notions as peace linguistics, world Englishes, conflict talk and strategies, verbal politeness and mitigating devices, and empathic analysis will be explored.

On the analytical side, the linguistic, structural and rhetorical features of a variety of texts (news reports, video broadcasts, dialogic interactions, etc.) concerning topical themes of political and economic international relations will be identified and discussed.

On the more practical side, the course will develop oral and written communication competences; students will be asked to summarize texts, draw up projects, role-play diplomatic negotiation scenarios, and listen to, understand and respond to speeches given by leading politicians in the multilateral fora of international cooperation.

  - Practical activities of written and oral text production and comprehension (entaling the use of authentic audio-visual materials)
  - Role-play practice

• The final exam will consist of both a written and an oral assessment of the theoretical and practical competences acquired during the course.
  
  The final exam is made up of two parts, a written and an oral one. Students are required to pass the written paper to be admitted to the oral discussion. The written part includes a written summary of a 4-5 minute-long videoclip from a news broadcast, and a language exercise on the use of English for diplomatic purposes. The oral discussion will focus on the theoretical notions covered in class. Assessment of both parts will take equal account of linguistic correcteness and accuracy of content.
  
  As an optional piece of work adding extra points to the final mark, students will draw up a 1000-word DEVELOPMENT AID group project.
