Prerequisiti

None. Yet some basic knowledge of public international law is preferred. For those
students not having such an experience, Professor Baratta will provide for some basic
notions of international law in order to give the essentials of the subject-matter.

Obiettivi del corso

The course provides an introductory overview of the law of international institutions,
covering the major organizations and explaining their role and governing law.

Students are expected to acquire a basic knowledge of the the founding principles of
the international institutions and, in particular, to develop a critical approach to the
IOs system.

Programma del corso

8 cfu program:
- Overview of existing International Institutions (UN, WTO, World
Bank, ICSID system, EU, European Council)
- The function of International Organizations
-Common Institutional Problems

6 cfu program (for students of other Departments having chosen this course)
- Overview of existing International Institutions (UN, WTO, World
Bank, ICSID system, EU, European Council)
- The function of International Organizations
- Selected Common Institutional Problems

Slides, cases and materials will be available for students who attend classes.

Metodi didattici
  • Lectures and seminars. All the students are requested to actively participate to the
    seminars. Seminars will focus on specific case law of international judges (mainly
    International Court of Justice, European Court of Human Rights, ECJ). Groups of
    students can join and work together, though their contribution will be assessed
    individually.
Modalità di valutazione
  • The exam covers only the topics that are part of the course
    or of the book. In essence, questions are open and the students will have the
    opportunity to elaborate their answers. Exam is closed book examination. Students
    explain their answers orally to the Professor and are supposed to situate answers in
    the context of the course as a whole.
