Uses of the Past: Fiction, Representation and the Politics of Memory
The past is never simply the past. It is continually reconfigured in response to the
changing interests and concerns of the present. The process of rethinking and
reimagining past epochs is one with which late-modern novelists willingly engage.
This module will explore contemporary writers' fascination with history, heritage and
the rewriting of the past. We will investigate in particular: different uses of the past
in male- and female-authored novels; the double temporal frame of neo-Victorian
fiction; eroticised representations of the nineteenth century; the complex legacy of
the two World Wars in fiction and the intersection between war narratives and love
stories. This module is intended to stimulate reflection on the ways in which
traditions and memories are being refashioned through the work of fiction and on the
regime of historicity of our time.
