Prerequisiti

There are no prerequisites. However, it is recommended to attend the course "Globalization and Theories of Justice" held by Prof. Benedetta Giovanola in order to gain a solid theoretical background useful for the analysis of the concrete case studies that will be addressed in the lab.

Obiettivi del corso

The lab aims at offering conceptual and practical tools to understand the impact of digital technology and especially of technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) systems such as machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms on matters of global justice and discrimination. The lab will integrate theoretical reflection, applied work on case studies, and analysis of phenomena of injustice and discrimination prompted by digital technology and reinforced by AI systems at a global level in a wide range of social domains, from criminal justice to healthcare. Students are expected to gain knowledge and specific competencies to detect, comprehend, critically reason on, and practically investigate how digital technology and AI systems are driving forces of global justice and/or injustice affecting and shaping international relations as well as the development of national and international policy regulations.

- Technology for Global Justice: international ethical frameworks, normative standards, and policy guidelines on global justice, discrimination mitigation, and digital technology regulation;

- Digital Technology & Health Justice;
- Digital Technology & Epistemic Justice.

Metodi didattici
  • Critical discussion; teamwork; case studies (specific material including papers and case studies will be provided during the classes and updated online on the instructor's webpage).
Modalità di valutazione
  • Oral: aimed at evaluating the application of knowledge and critical capability developed during the lab to the analysis, presentation, and discussion of a case study, selected by the student in accordance with the instructor.
