Advanced notions of General Linguistics
The aim of this course is to outline the theoretical principles and main applications of computational linguistics.
Particular attention will be devoted to corpus linguistics and its applications in translation and terminography.
This course aims to enrich and complete the knowledge previously acquired by students in the field of language studies through the development of skills, including practical ones, related to the principal applications of natural language analysis.
Introduction to the basic principles of computational linguistics.
Introduction to the various branches of research relating to formal analysis of language.
Methods of computational analysis of the text.
Examination of the analysis of linguistic data in the framework of corpus linguistics, paying special attention to its applications within translation practice and terminography.
Linguistic data analysis tools and methodologies applied to different levels of natural language analysis.
Design, construction and annotation of a corpus.
Use of corpora in an interlingual perspective.
Data acquisition and management for terminology applications.

Classes will include lectures integrated by hands-on activities entailing the use of resources available on the web, as well as individual or group work on the IT tools covered in the course.
- The exam will be oral, and will focus on the assessment of the competences acquired by the students, i.e. disciplinary knowledge, expressive skills and mastery of the specialized language and, for students attending the course, the practical skills developed through hands-on class activities.
