European Union Law
The course aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the main content of Food Law in the European Union. Therefore, the course will deal with the core elements of the structure of the EU Food Law.
Upon completion of this course, students shall be able to: know and understand the basic concepts and rules of EU Food Law; know and understand the application of specific regulations concerning the most relevant topics in the field; identify the legal issues raised by specific problems and apply their knowledge of the principles and main provisions of EU Food Law; make independent judgments; efficiently communicate using an appropriate legal terminology; learn from the critical reading of case-law and other materials.
- Introduction to EU Food Law;
- The sources of EU Food Law;
- The development of EU Food Law;
- The General Food Law: general principles and requirements;
- Food Hygiene;
- Food information: labelling and advertising (mandatory particulars, nutrition and health claims, quality schemes);
- Market access requirements;
- Food Law procedures, official controls, and food frauds.

The classes are both theoretical and practical, based on the analysis of case studies.
The typologies of classes adopted include a combination of lectures, analysis of case studies and documents, seminars, group work, individual research carried out by students, and classroom discussion.
The use of slides and the vision of videos and documentaries are part of the teaching aids.
Flipped classroom teaching methodology is also used.
Students are required to take an oral exam consisting of three questions about three topics of the course's program.
The exam will be conducted in English.
The criteria adopted for the determination of the grades are the following:
- knowledge and comprehension of the topics: 20% of the final grade;
- ability to make connections: 20% of the final grade;
- capacity of analysis, independent and critical thought: 20% of the final grade;
- ability to apply knowledge: 20% of the final grade;
- use of appropriate legal terminology: 20% of the final grade.
