Demonstrate the ability to reflect insightfully on the authors and texts in the syllabus, to read and discuss literature in terms of aesthetic and formal issues (plot, character, narrator, imagery etc.), to understand and use different critical and historical approaches to Victorian novels; to communicate your reflections, analyses, and arguments effectively in speaking and writing.
The ticklish topic: money and politics in the Victorian novel.
This course aims to examine three Victorian novels and explore the social and cultural world in which the Victorian novel was produced and consumed. We will pay close attention to the novels’ engagement with financial and political issues, trying to gain a better understanding of how the Victorians imagined their own commercial modernity.
