B1 level in Spanish, according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
Students are expected to:
a) be able to read texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries about
the discovery and exploration of the New World;
b) be able to understand the complexity of notions and concepts covered in
the course, such as those of "travel", "imaginary", "otherness", and "encounter of cultures".
c) acquire the tools for the individual study and the autonomous reading of literary texts.
The voyage of Discovery. Shipwrecks, adventures and encounters through the narrative of the New
World. Readings from: Cristobal Colon, Álvar NúÑez Cabeza de Vaca, Hernán Cortés, Bernal Díaz
del Castillo, Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo, Bartolomé de las Casas.

The seminar is held entirely in Spanish. As a seminar, the attendance is obligatory and students are
espected to have an active participation. Teaching methodologies are:
Lecture with Guided Discussion
Close readings
Presentations
Individual and group researches.
- The exam is written. It consists of a series of questions aimed at ascertaining the
theoretical knowledge of the students, and requires the formulation of answers in
order to contextualize and analyse texts. The exam will evaluate knowledge learning and critical
understanding, independent judgment and communication skills. The grades will be alphabetical.
