Benedetta Barbisan is Associate Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Macerata (Italy). Previously, she has held positions at Boston College Law School, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, King’s College London, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. She has lectured also at the Universidad de Oviedo and at Queen’s University Belfast. She was Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington D.C (where she taught courses on European constitutionalism) and professeur invité at the Université Catholique de Lille (France) (where she taught Droit public comparé: méthodes et pistes de recherche). Alongside numerous essays in scholarly journals and book chapters on relevant topics of constitutional law in comparative perspective*, she has authored a book on Marbury v. Madison and the origin of the judicial review in the U.S. (Nascita di un mito. Marbury v. Madison e le origini della giustizia costituzionale negli Stati Uniti, il Mulino, 2008), a book on constitutional patriotism in Italy (Patriottismo costituzionale. Il caso italiano in prospettiva comparata, ESI, 2022) and, with Giuliano Amato, a book on the dialogue between the Italian Constitutional Court, the EU Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights (Corte costituzionale e Corti europee. Fra diversità nazionali e visione comune, il Mulino, 2016). With Giuliano Amato and Cesare Pinelli, she has edited the volume Rule of Law vs Majoritarian Democracy (Hart, 2021). She coordinates the PhD programme in Global Studies. Institutions, Rights, Democracy at the University of Macerata. She is also a member of the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL), the International Constitutional Law Society (ICON-S), the Associazione Diritto pubblico comparato ed europeo (DPCE), A.S.T.R.I.D. She is one of the members of the General Council of ICON-S Italian Chapter, of the editorial board of Diritto pubblico (il Mulino) and of the scientific board of Diritto pubblico comparato ed europeo (il Mulino). She has created the first lectureship in Italy in comparative constitutional law, the Alberico Gentili Lectures, delivered by prominent legal scholars from all over the world and judges from a number of jurisdictions. Among the keynote speakers: Guido Calabresi (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit), Robert A. Burt (Yale Law School), Giuliano Amato (Italian Constitutional Court), Christopher McCrudden (Oxford University; Michigan Law School), Daphne Barak-Erez (Supreme Court of Israel), Sonia Sotomayor (U.S. Supreme Court), Edwin Cameron (Constitutional Court of South Africa), Silvana Sciarra (Italian Constitutional Court), Yves Mény (Emeritus European University Institute), Wojciech Sadurski (University of Sidney), Peter Paczolay (European Court of Human Rights), Roberto Gargarella (Universidad de Buenos Aires). She also coordinates the collection Alberico Gentili Lectures that the publisher il Mulino has especially created after the lectureship and has edited all the books published in this series**. The Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia Treccani in Rome has appointed her scientific director, alongside Giuliano Amato and Cesare Pinelli, of the Atlas of the Italian Constitution.
